There’s an unexpected subplot:  when I was twelve I thought I was the reincarnated Davy Crockett, tramping through the Great Smoky Mountains, hunting squirrels, skinning goats.  What’s that got to do with sailing?  Nothing!  But I really need to share the story with you 🙂

  3. Dear Dennis,

Diane Wyman here–Dave’s wife. He just had me read the last pages of the chapter (The Inn of Last Resort) in your book, which he is reading.

Synchronistically, I have recently downloaded de Chardin’s book
Hymn of the Universe and am reading it. It is out of print, and therefore available. https://archive.org/details/HymnOfTheUniverse
I like the introduction by the translator best, so far. I am at the stage of life when I enjoy and affirm remarks, explanations, or insights that are in keeping with my own experiences. And insights. Ha ha.
As for the book itself, I am finding it to be very dense. (Your explanation of “the mysteries” on the other hand, was deep. But accessible.)

I have never had a charismatic experience, as it is properly defined.
    I am a poet, though…I have made ocean passages…
I have flown in a small plane…and two Thursdays ago,
at the bedside of a stranger I was visiting in the hospital
as a volunteer with The Spiritual Care Team,
    a new song for him
    welled up in me
and it sang and sang itself with my voice
until the knot in his forehead disappeared.

    AROHANUI
    Big Love
(from the Divine point of view)

I carry a love so large
I place it like a planet in my pocket

I lift a love so high
it reaches down to touch galaxies

I lower a love so deep
it seeps beyond where even I can measure

Run your fingers along my love to
    follow its ridges and valleys

    Feel Arohanui under your arms
dragging you out of the deep

    Open your eyes; look skyward.
I have placed my shining there for you to see.

    Close your eyes. Listen.
You will hear an infant breathing.

    Match your own breath
    with its rhythm and

I will fill it with Arohanui.
    Like mine.

    Arohanui, Diane
